Sanctuary

Vicky Chavez and her two daughters sought sancutary in First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City for three years to avoid deportation during the first Trump administrations more aggressive anti-immigrant policies. She nor her daughters ever left the church during that time and lived within the confines of it's walls. They couldn't feel the sunlight on their skin nor grass under their feet for the entire time in the church. Her youngest daughter spent most of her entire life in sanctuary.

After Biden was elected president Chavez was able to received temporary stay, which will allow her and her daughters to leave the confines of her sanctuary.

I spent a day with Chavez and her children inside the church documenting their lives for a New York Times Opinion piece written by Chavez.
