Aboard the Anthony Rucker
The Anthony Rucker is one of 25 batteaux, flat bottom wooden boats, that makes an eight day journey down the James River from Lynchburg, Va. to Richmond, Va. for the James River Batteau Festival. The festival participants are reenacting the journey made by black slaves who transported tobacco down the river in the 18th century. Life along the river is rustic and the reenactors see themselves as one giant family that brings people back year after year. This is one day in their journey.
